Holden
Holden is an automobile manufacturer based in Port Melbourne, Victoria. Holden was founded by James Alexander Holden, who began manufacturing saddles and harnesses in 1856 before embarking on the manufacture of carriages and wagons.
In 1908 he moved into the automotive industry, taking over a business established by his father, T. J. Holden, at 31 Grenfell Street, Adelaide, which became J A Holden & Co (Holden’s Motor Body Builders).
In 1931 GM bought a controlling interest (58%) in what had become General Motors–Holden’s Ltd; GM then purchased the remaining shares from shareholders
for A$1 per share.
The first motor vehicle built by GMH was a truck called “Old Number One,” completed on August 23, two months after the company’s incorporation on July 7. Old number one is currently displayed at the National Museum of Australia in Canberra.
The following year saw production move to Port Melbourne with Ransom E Sims providing much-needed finance through their retail arm Sid Richardson and Company Pty Ltd under license to sell vehicles manufactured by GMH.
While producing automobiles since 1908, when it opened its doors as General Motors Limited (South Australian Branch), Holden was also making commercial vehicles, including trucks during World War II for use overseas by American forces stationed there as well as Australian forces fighting overseas against Japan between 1941–42 before again restarting production after peace was declared between Germany/Italy & Allies in Europe without any competitive rivals like Ford Australia or Ford New Zealand entering output until 1950 when both companies commenced making cars here again using imported CKD kits from US plants.
