The Caribbean Premier League was founded in 2013 by Cricket West Indies as the premier T20 tournament in the Caribbean Islands. The annual T20 cricket tournament is currently sponsored by Hero MotoCorp and is officially termed the Hero CPL. Inaugural tournament of the Caribbean Premier League was won by the Jamaica Tallawahs team, who defeated the Guyana Amazon Warriors in the final match.
CPL Cricket Five-Wicket Hauls:
The first five-wicket taker in CPL was Shakib Al Hasan of the Barbados Tridents against the Trinidad & Tobago Red Steel on August 3, 2013. Shakib took six wickets for six runs, which is also the best bowling figures in an innings by a player in the CPL tournament. This is considered to be a notable achievement in international cricket as few bowlers have achieved this feat in cricketing history. He is the youngest player to achieve the feat of a five-wicket haul in a single inning of the Caribbean Premier League at the age of 26.
The West Indian player Fidel Edwards of the Trinidad & Tobago Red Steel was another fast bowler to pick up a five-wicket haul in the CPL tournament. He achieved this feat on 13th August, 2018 against the Guyana Amazon Warriors.
David Wiese of the Guyana Amazon Warriors team player also shares the feat of picking up a five-wicket haul in the 2020 season of Caribbean Premier League. Wiese’s improvisation of his pace bowling attack has helped him succeed in the T20 format.
Dwayne Bravo is the only player to take a five-wicket haul while playing as a captain for the Trinidad & Tobago Red Steel. He picked up five wickets for 23 runs on July 24, 2015, against the Jamaica Tallawahs.
The most economical five-wicket haul in Caribbean Premier League was by Sohail Tanvir who took five wickets for just three runs. He picked up five wickets with an economy rate of 0.75 and a bowling average of 0.60, against the Barbados Tridents on August 29, 2017.
Hayden Walsh Jr. became the youngest native West Indian player to pick up a five-wicket haul in the Caribbean Premier League when he claimed 5 wickets at the age of 27. He took 5 for 19, the only five-wicket haul across the entire tournament in 2019 in a big win over the defending champions.
The most recent five-wicket haul in the Caribbean Premier League was taken by Mohammad Nabi of the St Lucia Zouks against the opposing team of St Kitts and Nevis Patriots on August 27, 2020. He took the wickets of Chris Lynn Evin, Lewis Nick Kelly, Denesh Ramdin, and Sohail Tanvir. The 35-year-old all-rounder achieved the feat of taking five wickets in his four over spell with magnificent figures of 5 wickets for 15 runs. This is also Nabi’s fifth 4-wicket haul in five different franchise leagues.
The Caribbean Premier League season of 2013 and 2015 saw the most 5 wickets in CPL tournament. Two five-wicket hauls were achieved in each of these seasons while none of the bowlers could take five wickets in a single inning in the CPL seasons of 2014 and 2016.
