Once you have completed this, you will then be required to sit an exam, which you will need to pass in order to apply to get a license to practice as a therapist in your state. If you currently have a bachelor’s degree, then you may be able to skip the first four years and use your current qualification to enroll on a master’s degree to prepare you for working as a counselor. However, some master’s degree programs might accept students with a different bachelor’s degree on the condition that you take additional courses.
