He completed his residency in internal medicine at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. He also completed a medical oncology and hematology fellowship at the Mayo Clinic. The Netherlands-born Jan Van Deursen is an internationally recognized American scientist. He discovered one of the main causes of aging and is developing innovative treatments to cure age-related diseases. Born in the Netherlands, Van Deursen obtained his Ph.D. from the University of Nijmegen in 1993 and worked at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee. In 1999, he moved to the Mayo Clinic, where he developed his lab. From 2000 to 2020, Jan Van Deursen served as the Mayo Clinic’s Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology chair.

Van Deursen is an outstanding example of an exceptional researcher. Jan has developed mouse models of human diseases with a keen interest in basic medical research. His research on the role of aneuploidy in cancer and molecular mechanisms of aging has been widely published in top journals. For many years, his research has helped save countless lives. So, what is Jan Van Deursen’s legacy? Here are some of his most notable accomplishments.

In 1999, Dr. van Deursen earned his doctorate in cell biology and moved to the Mayo Clinic. He worked with scientists to develop a mouse model susceptible to a chromosome abnormality. His focus soon turned to senescent cells, which slow down organ and tissue function. His team’s efforts have led to developmentof new drugs that treat aging and age-related diseases. This research is already extending human life and the lives of mice.

The work of Jan Van Deursen will impact lives and health for decades to come.
