Many people do not realize how many different types of accountants there are. Contrary to popular belief, there is not a typical accountant that fits all needs. While some accountants may be a good fit for certain businesses, there are many different types of accountants that all play different roles within the finances of the company. Certified Public Accountant

This is one of the more common types of accountants. A certified public accountant has responsibility to do tax preparation, financial planning, auditing, and other various tasks. Typically, these types of accountants work for large corporations, nonprofits, the education system, and do all of the accounting for them. Because it is required to pass a national test in order to become a CPA, oftentimes, CPAs have the knowledge, experience and ability to be promoted to a higher position of the chief financial office for one of these businesses. Becoming a CPA may seem to be extremely difficult, but there are many different opportunities that come along with putting in the time and effort to do so.

An auditor is almost exactly as it sounds. This type of accountant checks all of the financial statements to make sure that they are all correct, and that there is no fraudulent activity that is going along. There are two different types of auditors: internal and external. The difference between these two is that the internal auditor does the audits from within the company, while the external auditor does the audits independent of the company who is being audited. Similar to the CPAs, these types of auditors can work in almost any industry, and there is also a high demand for them in the workforce.

Tax Examiner

A tax examiner is also as it sounds to be. An accountant who chooses to go down this path, will be examining federal, state, and local tax returns that are filed by small businesses. It is their responsibility to make sure that everything is reported and accounted for correctly. They also list and resolve any errors that may have occurred on the statements. The tax examiners work for the government in making sure that everyone paid the correct amount of taxes, and that there was no instance of over or under paying.
