Do Truckers Need A Navigation System?

Truck owners chose their vehicle for different reasons, some need it for their jobs. But if you’re a trucker who loves to get off the highway and enjoy adventurous roads, then you’re probably someone who lives to get away from modern civilization as well. Regardless of the reason you opted to own a truck instead of a regular car, you may want to consider getting a navigation system that goes beyond the maps on your phone. But why?

Regular GPS May Not Be Enough For Off-Road Trips

While we all probably have some form of GPS and a maps app on our phones, these maps are not usually updated well in areas that move too far away from cities and main roads. As a off-road trucker, you’re much more likely to get where you want using the best trucker GPS you can afford, because this will include off-road maps as well as details about the terrain that might not be available on regular GPS found on your phone.

Phone Batteries Aren’t As Reliable As You Want Them To Be

We’re all familiar with that dreadful low battery signal of our phones. It seems that as phones evolve, their battery life is never enough. This is especially true when you are using an app that requires a constant connection to your GPS location. Truckers (of any kind) quickly discover that relying on their phone batteries to supply enough power for navigation is unrealistic. Even if you use a USB cable to charge your phone – that still won’t be enough.

GPS Systems Have Better Network Connection

Not only does the GPS connection suck up the battery life of your phone, but the networks that our smartphones depend on aren’t as stable as we may believe. They may be good for video calls and voice calls, but being on the move and securing a connection to GPS is no easy feat. GPS systems are better suited for this purpose because they do not constantly change connections looking for the faster system – they only connect to the GPS network. This not only saves battery life, but gives more accurate coordinates and thus better directions.

Why You Need A GPS System

After all this, you may be wondering whether it is worth it to get a GPS system anyway. Well, if you’re an off-road enthusiast, it’s better to know exactly where you’re going so that you don’t get lost. In fact, it is considered safer. Many people who  like spending time outdoors – hiking, hunting, etc. – prefer to keep a GPS system with them to stay safe. As for those who need their trucks for work – a navigation system can help you get to your clients faster and easier, especially if you are operating in a large area where you won’t likely be familiar with all the roads.

At the end of the day, a navigation system is a useful tool to have in your truck. It will make sure you are never lost, and you can get to where you need to be using faster routes.
