Jan Van Deursenis a physician at the Mayo Clinic. He specializes in medical oncology and hematology and has been with the Mayo Clinic since 2004. Dr. Van Deursen’s research interests include gastrointestinal cancers, liver tumors, and neuroendocrine tumors, and he has published numerous papers in these research areas.
In addition to his clinical and research work, Dr. Van Deursen is also an active member of the Mayo Clinic Cancer Center. He serves on the Executive Committee and is the Vice Chair of the Clinical Research Program. He is also a member of the Cancer Center’s Steering Committee and the Developmental Therapeutics Program Leadership Group.
Dr. Van Deursen is originally from the Netherlands. He received his medical degree from Utrecht University in the Netherlands. He completed his residency in internal medicine at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. He also completed a medical oncology and hematology fellowship at the Mayo Clinic. The Netherlands-born Jan Van Deursen is an internationally recognized American scientist. He discovered one of the main causes of aging and is developing innovative treatments to cure age-related diseases. Born in the Netherlands, Van Deursen obtained his Ph.D. from the University of Nijmegen in 1993 and worked at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee. In 1999, he moved to the Mayo Clinic, where he developed his lab. From 2000 to 2020, Jan Van Deursen served as the Mayo Clinic’s Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology chair.
Van Deursen is an outstanding example of an exceptional researcher. Jan has developed mouse models of human diseases with a keen interest in basic medical research. His research on the role of aneuploidy in cancer and molecular mechanisms of aging has been widely published in top journals. For many years, his research has helped save countless lives. So, what is Jan Van Deursen’s legacy? Here are some of his most notable accomplishments.
In 1999, Dr. van Deursen earned his doctorate in cell biology and moved to the Mayo Clinic. He worked with scientists to develop a mouse model susceptible to a chromosome abnormality. His focus soon turned to senescent cells, which slow down organ and tissue function. His team’s efforts have led to developmentof new drugs that treat aging and age-related diseases. This research is already extending human life and the lives of mice.
The work of Jan Van Deursen will impact lives and health for decades to come. He is a leader in promoting diversity among faculty and staff members and filled 5 of his six tenure-track positions with diverse candidates. He also aims to foster non-tenure track faculty at Mayo Clinic. He partnered with leadership to create mentoring programs and institutional support for new hires. And his research lab at the Mayo Clinic has remained diverse and inclusive throughout his career.
