Top Things to Consider Before Buying a Water Purifier

Water is essential for our survival, and it plays an important role in our daily lives. We drink water multiple times throughout the day to keep ourselves hydrated. But how aware are you of the quality of the water that you are consuming?

Impure and contaminated water can cause serious concern and lead to hazardous health problems for children and adults. You need to install a water purifier dispenser in your house, considering such risks.

There are hundreds of water purifiers available in the market that claim to be the best company to provide the purest water. But how do you choose the best one from the other? With the help of the following guidelines, you can gather information about selecting a gem of a water purifier from the rest.

Contents

TDS of Water

TDS stands for Total Dissolved Solids present in your water. It comprises all the inorganic salts, such as small amounts of organic substances dissolved in the water.

Around or under 500 PPM TDS levels are safe for the human body. Generally, groundwater from bore wells and tube wells has higher TDS levels than Surface waters like water from the rivers, lakes, and reservoirs.

Purifying Technologies

The kind of water you get at your home determines the type of water purifier you should purchase. If the municipal corporation supplies your water, it is surface water, and you need to concern yourself only with eradicating microbiological impurities like bacteria and viruses.

But if the tankers supply your water, then it is groundwater with higher levels of TDS impurities that alter the taste of the water, and such water also has higher chances of affecting your health in the run.

Before buying a cleaner, check your water TDS if you get groundwater supply. If the TDS levels that can be easily measured by a TDS meter show results above 500 PPM, then an RO water purifier would be your ideal option.

But if your water TDS levels are lower than 500 PPM, then a well-designed UV purifier could be sufficient to purify your water. You can buy an AI cleaner with sensing purification technology if you get both groundwater and surface water.

When you have carefully conducted your water test, keep in mind that if your TDS levels are under 200 PPM, purchasing an RO water purifier could greatly affect your health in the long run.

If the TDS levels are initially low, then a RO water purifier strips most of the essential minerals and salts from the water. And about 80 percent of the water is wasted when using an RO water purifier.

Water consumption of your family

As you will be installing a water purifier at home, do not forget to consider your family size. One of the main reasons a purifier comes with storage capacity is to ensure that you have enough water even without electricity.

Before making the final decision, calculate the amount of drinking water your family consumes and the amount of water used for cooking. If you have a large family, buying a countertop or under-the-counter water purifier would be advisable.

Cost of Filter Replacement

All water purifiers work the same way. Water continuously passes through a removable cartridge that is filled with filtering mediums that filter all the impurities. Over time these filters get clogged because these are the ones doing the heavy-duty work.

And when these filters get clogged, the water does not get completely purified. To make sure that the water is continuously well purified, you need to change the filter regularly.

The cost of these filters depends on the type and the model of the water purifier you have purchased. If you do not have clear information about the cost of replacing or repairing these filters, it could cause inconvenience and confusion in the future.

Therefore make sure you are well informed. To reduce the repairing and the replacement cost, you could opt for the AMC option.

Water Pressure

Your water supply flow determines which filter you should buy. The water pressure depends on the elevation of your building, blocked pipes, and clogged filters. Most water purifiers need a pressure of 5 to 40 pounds per square inch.

If you have high water pressure, then a reverse osmosis system could work properly without any glitches. But if your water pressure is low, then a booster pump can be attached with an RO water purifier system. Or else, if your water supply’s TDS levels are low, then you could opt for an activated carbon purifier.

Electricity

Most water purifiers run on electricity; therefore, electricity plays a crucial role in the functioning of water purifiers. An Ultraviolet filter uses electricity to build ultraviolet radiation to eliminate bacteria, and without electricity, this system will be useless. Like the UV system, an RO water purifier also uses electricity to provide water pressure for the RO membrane.

There are other purifiers such as carbon purifiers and sediment and ultra-filters which do not require electricity. However, RO and UV systems remove TDS and other bacteria that can cause serious diseases.

While the non-electric cleaner can only remove a few chemicals, germs, and sand, even though RO and UV systems use electricity to function, it is advisable to purchase these water purifiers that run on electricity.

Service and Maintenance

Like the rest of the points, it is important to understand that all water purifiers need regular servicing and replacement of vital components. Depending on the quality of your water, the service and maintenance may differ.

In a general convention, you should have to change the outer filter every six months and the inner filter every year, depending on your family’s water consumption.

So before buying a water purifier, you should have to check the cost of different components needed for maintenance. Also, buy a purifier from a reputable brand that can provide regular service at your location.

If your water quality is poor, then you will have to spend on the service frequently. Taking this into consideration, check the service availability in your area and the service provider’s credentials.
