What Therapeutic Supports Does The NDIS Fund?

Many NDIS participants’ plans will include some form of therapeutic supports. “Therapeutic supports” is a broad term that refers to various services provided by a variety of companies.

Therapeutic supports help with the development of functional abilities and independence.

They’re supports that help with all aspects of everyday life, such as personal hygiene, getting around, speaking with others, forming positive connections, and participating in the community.

Within the Capacity Building budget category, therapeutic supports might fall under multiple different NDIS budgets.

Improved Daily Living

This budget allocates funds for therapists to collaborate with you to improve independence, increase community participation, and meet your goals. When you hear the word therapeutic supports, they often fall into this category.

Improved Health and wellbeing

Exercise physiologists, personal trainers, and dietitians are all included in this budget.

Improved Relationships

The majority of the therapies in this budget are focused on behavioural interventions and the development of social skills.

NDIS Therapeutic Supports

Your unique requirements and goals determine the therapeutic supports that the NDIS will pay for. They can be given to an individual or a group, at home, at a different location, or online.

Below is a list of some of the services provided through the Improved Daily Living budget.

Nurse assessment and support:

  • A delegated worker or support person is trained or supervised to respond to complex care needs (when care is not the health system’s responsibility).
  • Must be delivered by a registered nurse as one-on-one support.

Counselling services:

  • Assistance with self-awareness, emotional acceptance, and progress.
  • Personal resource development to assist you in achieving your goals.

Support for community engagement:

  • Tools to help you improve your social relationships.
  • Encourages you to join community groups to attain your goals, acquire insight into your life, and make well-informed decisions.

Community nursing for continence aids:

  • A registered nurse assesses, recommends, and provides training support for continence aids in the community.

Assistants in therapy:

  • An allied health assistant provides therapeutic help under the direction of a therapist.

Assessment, recommendations, therapy, or training:

  • By a psychologist, physiotherapist, occupational therapist, speech therapist, or other trained allied health practitioner.
  • Assessments for the use of assistive technology.

Consultation with a dietitian:

  • Advice on managing your health and wellbeing as a result of your disability, including the formulation of a diet plan.

Exercise physiology:

  • Provide you with exercise recommendations due to the impact of your disability.

Who provides therapeutic supports?

A qualified allied health professional, such as an occupational therapist, physiotherapist, nutritionist, or speech pathologist, provides most NDIS-funded therapeutic supports. A registered nurse can also provide them. The most significant factor is that the individual is qualified in their speciality.

How do they work?

The provision of therapeutic supports will, in most situations, begin with an initial consultation to discuss your support needs, abilities, and goals. You may also be asked to participate in activities or answer questions to assist the therapist in accurately assessing your needs.

After that, your therapist will devise a plan to assist you in reaching your goals. Hands-on therapy, regular appointments, exercises you may do at home, and/or lifestyle guidance are all possible options.
