Factors to consider when choosing a suitable Pet Feeder and bowls

Feeding your pet is a mandatory responsibility that requires perfection. Most dog owners estimate their pet’s meals based on bowls and pet feeders, resulting in underfeeding or overfeeding the pet. Hungry dogs aren’t quite friendly, while too full pets will make a mess to ease up. Some will be irritating and create a scene to get attention. It’s advisable to review your dog’s eating habits to avoid mealtime frustrations.

However, with the right amount of food sorted, getting the right type of feeders and bowls is a widespread dilemma. Many, if not all, dog owners don’t consider feeders and bowls as important factors. Some select the items due to color, basing it on the dog’s gender. Though good, it doesn’t hold much weight to qualify as a purchase reason. The market has multiple bowls from ceramic and plastic to Glass pet feeders and bowls. Each material has pros and cons, which several considerations should outweigh.

Factors to consider when selecting a pet feeder and bowl

Dog feeders are a significant aspect that should be discussed before settling for any materials. The elements are related to the dog’s features, giving an idea of what to pick.

Jaw structure

All dogs have a unique body structure that enables them differently. Some dogs have short, long, curve jaws based on their breed. The structure helps the dog eat from various surfaces without strain. Dog owners should consider their pet’s face and jaw structure before deciding on the feeding bowl. Dogs with the long face can easily feed from a deep bowl compared to a flat surface. The right choice will allow the dog to eat the right portion without hurting.

Chest-to-waist ration

The chest and waist ratio is a natural body structure that can’t be modified. Dogs need a proper posture when feeding to avoid bloating. The shape and chest structure should balance with the bowl type for better feeding.

Homeowners with spacious dog areas can opt for a large bowl. However, people relate large bowls with more food. One can measure the right amount and feed from the bowl. This provides room for dogs since the food is well-spread. The dog can control themselves and their own pleasure.

Feeding frequency

Many pet keepers have a scheduled feeding time known to their dog/pet. Some prefer automated feeders as they provide a mealtime plan. However, one must consider their dog’s size, breed, and eating habits before settling for an automated system. These factors allow proper selection to avoid starving your dog with small portions.

All dog owners should wash their dog’s bowls after every meal. This keeps the pet from any infections and keeps it happy with fresh food. Every bowl material presents its unique character, with some eligible for dishwasher. However, other materials have the ability to preserve microbes (bacteria) that affect the dog. Always compare the washability levels of all pet feeders before deciding.

Dog’s age

The factor can be viewed from different angles. Pet keepers can purchase raised or ground-level feeders based on the dog’s age. An old dog may find it challenging to bend, while puppies require low and shallow bowls. Every dog stage or age presents particular vigor; puppies and middle-aged dogs are active and may feed in haste. One needs to avail a bowl that will withstand the energy and strong enough for the dog.

Feeder/bowl base

The bases hold huge significance when purchasing a pet bowl. Most bases are smooth and tend to slide across the room as the dog feeds. This compels the dog to paw the bowl to avoid moving. Sometimes the dogs become frustrated pouring the food on the floor. One can check for rubber bases that sit well on the floor. However, one can also incorporate a mat for stability.

Types of Dog feeders and bowls to choose from

After establishing factors that determine the right bowl, the next step is to review every bowl material feature and see how they align with your dog’s needs.

They help reduce strain on the chest, back, joints, and shoulders. The bowls are suitable for senior dogs or pets with arthritis to avoid bending. Elevated bowls may be costly but high for puppies. However, they are best for dogs suffering from various sicknesses.

Slow feeder bowls

Slow feeders are designed for dogs with fast eating habits. They help control the dog and prevent dogs from having bloating, vomiting, or indigestion. Slow feeders have multiple ridges that prevent the dog from scooping too much. The bowls are made of plastic or stainless steel based on the user’s preference.

Automatic dog feeder

The automated feeders allow pet owners to feed their pets in smaller portions severally. The feeder is designed with a programmed and non-programmed facility. The feeder is set to fill the bowl at a particular time with defined portions.
