Different Types of Massage

Massage is often sought by the sick and elderly who struggle with chronic pain, rushed business executives who are tense and wound up, and the ordinary person who wants to reap the benefits of this type of therapy. The practice involves kneading the muscles and inducing relaxation, pain relief, and the release of feel-good hormones like serotonin

Pressure is varied according to the preferences and needs of the recipient. Some people require strong pressure while others can only handle the gentlest of touches. Trained therapists deliver massages, and they are perfectly safe. Massage can be used alongside or for physiotherapy.

Below we look at the different types of massage to help you choose the type(s) that will be most beneficial to you.

Swedish Massage

Swedish massage is best if your aim is relaxation. It is gentle and unwinds tense muscles. The therapist will use a mixture of techniques such as flowing strokes, kneading, and circular movements. It can take up to an hour and a half.

Hot Stone Massage

Hot stone massage is used for similar reasons to Swedish massage. Here are the advantages of this type of massage. Heated stones are used with or without hand massage.

Deep Tissue Massage

Deep tissue massage in Barnsley is used to relieve soreness after an injury or for chronic conditions, such as rheumatoid arthritis where pain is a constant source of distress. You can obtain a deep tissue massage from the ATP Physio Clinic when you look for a physiotherapist South Yorkshire.

Sports Massage

People who regularly play sports may develop a repetitive injury to a particular muscle group or joints. An example is tennis elbow. Golfers often develop lower back pain and also benefit from sports massage.

Even without a repetitive injury, sports players can go for sports massage to give them greater flexibility, prevention of injuries, pain relief, enhanced performance, and to decrease muscle stress and anxiety. It can be applied to certain areas or done as a full body massage.

Trigger Point Massage

Trigger point massage, as its name implies, targets certain points in the body where the muscles tighten and cause reflected pain to other areas of the body. This is common in fibromyalgia, which is a condition characterised by pain at certain locations. It could also be caused by an injury or migraine headaches. Massage focuses on the trigger points to relieve pain throughout the body. Different levels of pressure are used on trigger points.

Reflexology

Reflexology practitioners believe that points in the ears, hands, and feet correspond to organs and areas in the body. Massage of the feet, for example, can relieve problems like a swollen liver or headaches. Reflexology is also a good way to rebalance the body, achieve relaxation, restore healthy sleep patterns, reduce anxiety, uplift mood, and decrease pain syndromes.

Unlike most massage sessions, which take up to one and a half hours, reflexology usually lasts from half an hour to an hour. Also different is that this form of massage only touches the feet or hands. This means that clients can be fully clothed.

Physiotherapy

Physio focuses on manual therapy to help the body regain movement. This is sometimes necessary after a stroke or accident. Apart from this type of massage, physiotherapy teaches patients to lift objects correctly and how to avoid straining the body.

If you have never been for massage, you are missing a great way to destress.
